John Singleton Mosby is said to have never lost a battle. Mosby commanded partisan rangers (free ranging cavalry) who attacked behind enemy lines and would skedaddle or disappear like grey ghosts leaving destruction behind and earning him the name “Grey Ghost”. Mosby’s hat is like Jeb Stewart’s but Mosby’s was gray and at times lacked the plume. One plume is correct for a major but Mosby was promoted to Lt. Col (2 plumes) and eventually full colonel (3 plumes).
