John Wayne as J.B. Books.
John Wayne's last movie, The Shootist, was, I think, one of his very
best. Featuring Lauren Bacal, Jimmy Stewart, Ron Howard, Richard
Boone, Hugh Obrian, Harry Morgan, and John Carradine The Shootist
had an extraordinary cast as well as an excellent story based on a novel
by Glendon Swarthout.
John Wayne filmed The Shootist with only one lung. In fact John Wayne
filmed his last six or eight movies after having part of a cancerous lung
removed. I guess you've heard that John Wayne was tough, but this is
more than tough because his discomfort never showed on screen until
The Shootist. John Wayne would just suck it up and go to work. In The
Shootist pain and discomfort was part of his character so he didn't have
to reach far to play J.B. Books; the gunfighter dying of cancer.
I had friends/customers who worked on some of John Wayne's last
movies and they told me that he was obviously experiencing great
discomfort, but he did not speak of it. Though John Wayne was
sometimes understandably grumpy he was always good to those he
worked with and always gave them a moderate bonus at the end of
filming.
If you don't have The Shootist in your DVD collection you're missing a great
movie and a piece of film history.
We make The Shootist hat on Resistol 5X Beaver felt. John Waynes'
movie hat may well have been a Resistol as the Resistol silverbelly is
just like J.B. Books' hat, grayish. We offer The Shootist hat with a 5"
brim and a narrow ribbon bound edge or 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 with a raw
(unnbound) edge. The movie hat was probably 4 1/2" or so , with an
unbound edge. Be aware that this is a big hat the crown is 6" tall
combined with that big brim. This hat shouts, John Wayne!
Choose your brim width based on your body size, a larger, heavier guy
can look good in the 5" brim while many of us would prefer the 4 1/2"
brim which is still large.
The genuine eastern diamondback rattlesnake hat band, with the rattler
intact, is perfect for this hat and is correct for The Shootist.
