John Wayne actually wore this same hat in several movies over a
period of many years. The hat first appeared in the John Ford directed
cavalry trilogy; Fort Apache in 1948, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon in 1949
and Rio Grande in 1950. John Wayne played a cavalry officer in each of
the three movies. The hat was bent and pinched differently in some
scenes in each movie and the style evolved becoming more extreme by
the third movie, Rio Grande. The same hat also appeared in Hondo in
1953 but with the brim re-formed to dip both in the front and back. Then
the hat returns with a leather strap in place of the officer cord in Legend
of The Lost (with Sophia Loren) in 1957. John Wayne wore the hat in a
movie for the last time in the 1959 movie Rio Bravo. By this time the hat
had several holes in it but John Wayne treasured this hat and wore it
while directing The Alamo in 1960.
A story I heard from a Hollywood acquaintance said that there was a
fire at Wayne mansion while John was away. John's wife, I think it was
Amparo, called him and asked what she should save for him, he said
"save my hat!" She did. The story continues that in 1962 John loaned the
hat to his friend Sammy Davis Jr. for use in a movie, Sergeants Three
with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. Sammy
had a big head for his size so it appeared to fit pretty well. But when the
hat was returned it was filthy and trashed. John Wayne threw it away, he
threw away the most iconic hat in movie history; what a loss. The hat
should be in a museum. Remember this lesson, do not loan out your
favorite hats.
We re-create John Wayne's famous Cavalry hat as it appeared (most of
the time) in the third Cavalry movie Rio Grande. If you want the Rio
Bravo look then you will get a leather strap in place of the officer cord
