The Swede
Hell on wheels is the new western series on AMC Network. It is
a gritty and authentic show based on the construction of the East
to West half of the Transcontinental Railroad. Hell on wheels is
actually the name given to the tent city that moves along with
the progress of the railroad.
If you remember your history, the track was laid shortly after
the civil war so the conflict was very fresh in the minds of
Americans. The lead character named Cullen Bohannan,
expertly played by Anson Mount , was an officer in the
confederate army and his wife was killed by renegade Union
troops; so Bohannan is looking for revenge and has the
experience and skill with his guns to get it. Thomas (Doc)
Durant (played by Colm Meaney) is the railroad tycoon who
hires Bohannan as a "Walking Boss". As Bohannan claimed to
having experience with a black labor crew, having owned slaves.
Bohannan being a former slave owner did not sit well with Elam
Ferguson, one of the black workmen. Elam Ferguson is played
by Common; That's right, Common. He's a former rapper and
that's his chosen name; and he's perfect for this character.
The railroad is being built through Indian lands so of coarse the
Indians are not happy. Wes Studi plays Chief Many Horses who
has two sons, one of whom converted to Christianity, and is a
follower of Reverend Cole (played by Tom Noonan). Both
Reverend Cole and Joseph Black Moon (played by Eddie Spears)
try to resolve the conflict peacefully, while Chief Many Horses'
other son, Pawnee Killer, wants a fight. Wes Studi brings
gravitas to his character; ever since he played Magua in Last Of
The Mohicans he gets my attention with every word. You'll
want to see Chief Many Horses more often.
Another ongoing conflict is between Cullen Bohannan and an
employee of Doc Durant who's just called "The Swede". The
Swede is an icy character impressively played by Christopher
Heyerdahl. The Swede is a man you love to hate and he uses his
position and authority for extortion and abuse of other residents
of Hell On Wheels.
Hell On Wheels has so many conflicts going on all around the
main character, Bohannan, that there is not a dull moment.
There are other significant characters and conflicts going on but
suffice it to say that Hell On Wheels a must see show and you
need to see it from the beginning. Hell On Wheels is serialized so
seeing it from the beginning is important to understand what
exactly is going on with each character.
