   Lonesome Dove with Tommy Lee Jones as Captain Woodrow F. Call
and Robert Duvall as Gus McCrae, was an instant classic. This was
probably the best "made for T.V. Movie" ever done.
   Tommy Lee Jones/ Woodrow Call's hat was what we call an open
crown, meaning no dents or creases. This is actually how all hats came
from the factories until the 1930's. The shape in the crown (the top)
usually came about from use and abuse. But if you handle your hat by
the hat brim then you could maintain the open dome. Cowboy hats like
Captain Woodrow Call's were actually quite common in the old west. It
took practice , you just had to be disciplined about handling the hat.
Captain Woodrow Call had no problem with self discipline.
   Tommy Lee's portrayal of Captain Call always reminded me of a friend
from long ago. My friend liked to pack into the mountains alone, for
weeks at a time. He spent long periods without speaking. He
developed a hesitation and halting speech pattern just like Tommy Lee
Jones used as Captain Call
